STEM Concept:  Waves: Sound

Vibrating matter can make sounds and sound can make matter vibrate.

Volume is how loud or soft sound is.

This Storytime STEM-pack includes all the materials you need to engage kids in science activities that address the concept of sound, in particular how vibrating matter can make sound, and sound makes matter vibrate, as well volume, which tells us how loud or soft sound is.  Children explore how to make sound with a craft stick, and how a tuning fork can make sound, and make salt jump. This is followed by reading the popular children’s book Drum City. With a partner, children use different containers as “drums”, exploring how to produce loud and soft sounds. They then make up patterns of loud and soft sounds which they share with the group. Children apply their learning about volume of sound with a group rainmaking activity and reinforce their learning by explaining what they learned about sound, using the Sound Concept Cards. Included in this set, you'll find:

  • Detailed instructions (i.e., lesson plan) for the learning activities
